Winter visits

I worked nineteen winters on this loop. Winter is when the animals are worth watching and the crowds are gone — if you dress for it.

Cold = active

Almost every animal on the Canadian Wilds side is built for this weather. Bison, muskox, snowy owl, the Amur tigers — they come alive in the cold. Summer heat is what makes them lie in the shade and do nothing while you stand there sweating. A minus fifteen sunny morning is the best ticket of the year.

Bison in February. They will stand in weather that sends visitors back to the car, and they will look at you like you are the fragile one.

Thin crowds, short queues

Weekday mornings in January and February you can walk the whole loop in an hour and a half and see maybe forty other people. That is the difference between watching a tiger and watching the back of somebody's phone.

The lights event, honestly

The winter light trail runs from late November into early January, evenings only, and it is a separate ticketed thing from a daytime visit. What it is: a lit walking route through the grounds with hot chocolate and a few animal buildings open. What it is not: a night-time animal experience. Most of the animals are in their night quarters. Go for the lights, the kids, the photographs — not for the wildlife. Check the operator's own calendar for the exact dates each year; they move.

Dressing. Boots with grip, not fashion boots. The paths get packed ice near the entrance and the bridge. Two pairs of socks, mittens not gloves, and a thermos. The food court will sell you hot chocolate at a price that will make you wish you had brought the thermos.
